SOS Island Selects 16 Contestants for Survival Training with TV Star Les Stroud
Sept. 18, 2013 — Sixteen contestants from around the world have been chosen to participate in the interactive, online competition ‘SOS Island: Survival of the Smartest’ hosted by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
SOS Island merges live online streaming, social media and survival tactics to engage with audiences in an entirely new way. Over the course of the competition, viewers will be able to follow, interact with and vote for their favorite contestants through social media. ‘SOS Island’ debuts via live-stream on YouTube and Facebook on Sept. 30 at 3:30pm EST.
With over 11,500 submission videos from 132 countries, Samsung selected the top 16 global contestants who will depart to Puerto Rico on Sept. 28. They will spend one week training alongside survival expert and TV star Les Stroud. The final eight contestants who make the cut will proceed to SOS Island, a secret uninhabited island where they will survive in the wild and compete in challenges and games.
The survivors will then face off in a series of challenges using the Samsung GALAXY S4 zoom and GALAXY NX camera. The ultimate champion will be awarded the opportunity to win their own private island experience, a package worth $100,000 USD.
Meet the SOS Island Castaways:
CHRIS THOMPSON, United States: “The Hysterical Hottie” – After watching his original musical performances and light-hearted video blogs on YouTube, it becomes apparent that Thompson doesn’t shy away from the spotlight. The Los Angeles resident, who will do just about anything for a laugh, is not all fun and games. Thompson, 31, says he’s a very loyal friend who is always there to lend a hand.
KAREN CONSTANT, United States: “The Glam Enthusiast” – Constant, 26, is a teacher during the day. But when she goes to her home in Boston, she’s known to the YouTube community as ‘Glam Fun.’ With over 37,000 subscribers, she creates beauty tutorials that are aimed to entertain and often incorporate music into her videos. Karen loves to keep her viewers on their toes, so one never knows which hairdo she’ll be sporting. Constant is determined to win SOS Island with her fierce and bubbly personality.
BRITTANY JOYAL, United States: “The Hollywood Hopeful” – Joyal, 22, resides in Hollywood, Calif. A YouTube sensation in her own right, Joyal dropped out of college to make videos for a living. She is ready for anything thrown her way, armed with her quick wit and spunky personality.
ROSY MCMICHAEL, United States: “The Make-Up Maven” – Originally from Mexico, McMichael, 32, resides in Brownsville, Texas with her husband and 8-month-old son. The teacher-turned-make-up artist enjoys filming tutorials for millions of fans on her YouTube channel. She describes herself as fun, creative and positive — yet competitive.
GRAHAM HUGHES, United Kingdom: “The World Traveler” – Setting the world record in 2012 as the first person to travel to all 201 countries without flying, Hughes is up for adventure. The 34-year-old also set the Guinness World Record for the most countries visited in one year without flying-133 countries total. Hughes also hosts his own TV show, “Graham’s World,” which documents his travels. When he’s not traveling, he enjoys writing and directing short films for his Liverpool-based company, Hydra Studios.
MERT ERDIR, Turkey: “The Shutterbug” – Erdir, 19, is a passionate photographer and a big fan of survival challenges. Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Erdir once competed on Turkey’s ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire.’ He has also always dreamed of owning his own island.
ROBIN ISRAELSON, Sweden: “The Tech Whiz” – As a content producer and self-described “technology addict,” Israelson, 31, spends most of his day surrounded by technology and social media. He enjoys writing music and plays in a rock band during his spare time. Israelson thinks he’s the perfect contestant for ‘SOS Island’ because he was born on an island and enjoys traveling in addition to his penchant for social media.
JO CRAWSHAW, South Africa: “The Do-Gooder”— A UK-native and fitness fanatic, the 27-year-old Crawshaw is excited to be living out her dream in Johannesburg. Crawshaw recently opened a boxing studio specializing in teaching young girls self-defense. When not in the studio, she enjoys singing, playing guitar and writing her column ‘Techs and the City,’ which discusses love and dating in the digital age.
ALEXANDER MAN’KOV, Russia: “The Gamer”— A Russian-native and YouTube sensation, the 24-year-old Man’Kov, is a video game reviewer for the channel “Tomato Behind Bars.” Man’Kov says that he is excited to participate in ‘SOS Island’ because it will give him the opportunity to experience his favorite video game, “Far Cry,” in real life. Man’Kov, who is self-taught in English, is ready to put his survival skills to the test on ‘SOS Island.’
THOMAS POST, Australia: “The Geologist” – A resource geologist in Western Australia, Post, 26, is no stranger to high-tech gadgets and gizmos. He collects geological information with tools like digitizing tablets for mapping and GPS systems as part of his job. When not at work, Post delights in high-adrenalin activities like climbing, cycling, hiking and diving.
KALYN NICHOLSON, Canada: “The Beauty Guru” – Nicholson has found success on YouTube through her style and beauty videos. The 19-year-old loves to work-out and spend time outdoors in her free time. Though she describes herself as “super girly,” Nicholson is competitive and “always down to get a little dirty.”
LIRON MAIMON, Israel: “The Machine” – Referred to as “The Machine” by his friends, Maimon, 26, is in top-notch shape, running more than 20 miles a day. He maintains a strict diet and is a self-proclaimed perfectionist. His competitive instinct and discipline may prove an advantage over his opponents.
MURAD ALI, Jordan: “The Doctor” – A doctor by day, tech and sports fanatic by night, Ali, 24, is full of surprises. Characterizing himself as a “jolly” person, Ali says he’s friendly and a team player, but still a competitor at heart.
The other three contestants are still to be announced.
‘SOS Island’ casting director Vinnie Potestivo said, “These contestants are not only extremely outgoing, but tech-savvy too. This confidence and skill will set them apart on the island.”
On ‘SOS Island: Survival of The Smartest,’ contestants will advance based on their survival skills on the island, social media savvy to solicit votes and their technology smarts to maximize the functionality of their Samsung devices.
“The knowledge and skills required for survival on a deserted island will be vital to these contestants throughout the competition,” Les Stroud said. “This will be an experience these contestants and viewers will not soon forget.”
Tune in to the live stream on YouTube and Facebook on Sept. 30 as training week begins. Viewers can follow contestants via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The final eight will be selected on Oct. 5.
